2016 Hyundai Genesis vs. 2016 Mercedes-Benz E Class

When you are shopping for a new car, there are many requirements that you might want the car to meet. Most of the time, many car models meet few or none of the requirements for many buyers. However, there are a few sedans that seem to offer a good deal for all types of drivers. The 2016 Hyundai Genesis and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E class are some of these. In this case, the Hyundai easily trumps the Mercedes in terms luxury, performance and other metrics, despite what many may think. These are some of the facts proving this.

Design & Style

The Mercedes exterior design is appealing, but the fact that the same look is used in other Mercedes models means that it’s quite common particularly in cities. The Hyundai Genesis has a bold and appealing look. The interiors of both cars are of high quality as well. The Mercedes has a well laid-out interior, as you would expect from a German marque. However, the Hyundai Genesis trumps this by having a cleaner and more spacious interior. You tend to feel more comfortable in the Genesis compared to the Mercedes. With less buttons on the dashboard, the Hyundai also looks less complicated.

Technology & Safety

Basic technology features common to both include air conditioning, power mirrors, and power driver and passenger seats. Dual climate control zones are also offered. Some of the Genesis features not present in the Mercedes include an excellent audio system with sound widening technology, giving richer and fuller sound even at higher speeds. Connectivity to Apple and Android devices is also easier in the Hyundai compared to the Mercedes.

In addition to basics such as ABS and airbags, some of the high-end safety features that are common to the Mercedes and the Hyundai include traction control and cruise control. However, the Hyundai also trumps the Mercedes by having additional features including lane keeping assistance, a wide angle rearview camera, and curtain airbags. This is why the Genesis has perfect NHTSA safety scores.

The base Mercedes ships with a 2.1-liter, inline-4 engine generating 293 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque. This is mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The Genesis, on the other hand, has an impressive 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine producing 311 horsepower and 293 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 RPM. This is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox for smoother power delivery and gear changes.

The Bottom Line

You would expect a German import to be much better than a car from the Pacific rim but in this case, you would be wrong. The Mercedes E class is by no means a poorly made car, but the Hyundai Genesis is so well made that it simply exceeds expectations, and beats the Mercedes in many aspects when the price point is considered.
