2017 Hyundai Accent vs. 2017 Kia Rio

Over the past few decades, Hyundai has steadily increased the quality and reliability of its vehicles, and is today one of the most appealing vehicles in the market. The 2017 Hyundai Accent is particularly popular for people who are interested in getting comfort, practicality and ease of use. When shopping for such a vehicle, you may also run into the 2017 Kia Rio. Though the Kia does have its good points, the Hyundai is overall a much better choice. This is due to multiple factors including superior build quality.

Design & Style

The Kia Rio and the Hyundai Accent are world apart in terms of looks. The Kia looks somewhat restrained, and can be difficult to spot in traffic due to its unassuming looks. The Hyundai, on the other hand, has been designed with striking lines and curves, making it instantly recognizable by all. The Hyundai is a handsome car from all angles.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai and Kia both come with many technological and safety features as you would expect from a modern car. Some of these include antilock braking systems, driver and passenger airbags and side curtain airbags. However, the 2017 Hyundai Accent has more to offer than the Kia, even if you opt for the entry level model.

Some of the standard features available in the Hyundai but not in the 2017 Kia Rio include dynamic steering, rear airbags and height-adjustable restraints. This improves the handling and safety of the vehicle dramatically. The Hyundai also features a 4-speaker music system with USB and AUX jack input. As you would expect, the 2017 Hyundai Accent has an AM/FM radio with an advanced CD player capable of reading data been written to the CD in MP3 format, a feature missing in the 2017 Kia Rio.

The Kia Rio ships with a 1.5 liter inline-4 engine with VVT. This produces 130 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and generates 114 ft lb or torque at 4600rpm. The 2017 Hyundai Accent ships with 1.6 liter inline-4 engine with VVT, producing 137 hp and 123 ft lb or torque at 4850 rpm. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission which includes a shifter on the floor, providing smooth gear changes. Electronic traction control is also available on the Hyundai Accent.

As you can see, the Hyundai produces more power and torque compared to the Kia Rio despite both vehicles being in the same class. Combine this with the fact that the Hyundai is 50 pounds lighter than the Kia Rio, and it becomes clear why the Hyundai is faster and sharper to drive compared to the Kia Rio.

The Bottom Line

On the surface, the 2017 Hyundai Accent and the 2017 Kia Rio Fit might look similar by many accounts, so some people consider them to be the same car with different badges. However, the Hyundai has much more to offer compared to the Kia Rio, and is the better of the two.
