He2017 Hyundai Ioniq vs. 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EVading

When it comes to hybrids, car enthusiasts are torn between going for the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq and the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. While both exhibit great characteristics in various aspects to look for in a new-age hatchback, we are confident that the 2018 Ioniq takes the day. Below is a comparison of the two, and a few reasons why the market tilt against the 2017 Bolt EV.

Design & Style

Hyundai has done a fine job in making the Ioniq have a classy look both inside and out. It steals some exterior features from Elantra and has hidden many of the common components synonymous to hybrid cars. You may take it for a gasoline-only hatchback.

The interior of the 2018 Hyundai is not as highly styled and complex as other hybrids. Little adapting and learning is required for a new driver, giving it a pretty high score. We congratulate Chevrolet for doing a hybrid with a much better view of the outside than the 2018 Volt. The Bolt also features more leg room in the rear seats, thanks to a slimmer front seat design and the higher roofline, though we are not too sure if the Bolt is suitable as a 5-seater. The middle rear is rather squeezed so you would rather go for the Hyundai Ioniq.

Technology & safety

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt scores pretty well on crash tests; in fact, Chevy claims that the hatchback proves to be one of the safest in the hybrid models it has so far. They have done well to transfer impacts caused in a crash away from the passenger, which gives Chevrolet a plus for safety. We however notice a glare from the polished dash that may probably prove problematic to the driver on a sunny day.

The Hyundai can also be termed a fortress of safety. Its strongest points come from the myriad of safety features offered on all trims of the Ioniq – blind spot monitors, forward collision, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise controls and pedestrian detection. An upgraded lane departure and active lane assist has now been introduced on all versions of the Ioniq. I would rather handle an Ioniq than the Bolt on the road.

Electric cars are built generally to wind down the use of gasoline on the road. Both hatchbacks deliver a great deal on fuel economy. Looking at specifics though, the Chevrolet sores higher with a record 238 mile range on electric power alone. This is one of the highest in the US. Built on a 60-kWh battery pack, this Chevy’s engine gashed out 200 hp and picks to 60mph in less than 7 seconds.

The 1.6-liter inline-4 of the Ioniq however has one major advantage over the Bolt. Though its mile range is rated at 124, it is rated as the most energy-efficient hybrid in this year’s market with a rating of 136 MPGe, compared to Bolt’s 119 MPGe. Hyundai’s Ioniq is a calmer and a more peaceful car on the road, and with more aggression of the pad, the Hyundai doesn’t seem to complain.

The Bottom Line

Though both cars are good with fuel efficiency and offer a comfortable ride on the road. However, you get a better feel of the highway on the Ioniq. You will be much safer driving it and you will always have heads turning when you drive past an audience, thanks to the neat nature of the Ioniq’s exterior.
