2017 Hyundai Veloster vs. 2017 Mazda3

When it comes to hatchbacks, we are seeing a lot of interesting developments in the local auto market. Car enthusiasts are daring to shop for cars offering more than just what meets the eye. The focus is on two cars that have entered the scene; the 2017 Hyundai Veloster and the 2017 Mazda3. From a far, both cars have a lot of similarity, but a closer look reveals why Hyundai is gaining a lot of ground in the market. Let’s find out where the secret lies.

Design & Style

The 2017 Veloster is a combination of a number of styling techniques borrowed from its previous versions, and techniques cleverly synched into the car, borrowed from some of her bigger sisters like the Elantra. You will not find too many hatchbacks pull off odd looks from bent body rules and succeed. The 2017 Veloster has managed to place two doors on one side and a single large one on the other, and the market loves it.

Styling and design for the Mazda 3 is great, only that it maintains its set of doors. The front fascia has been well modified, but we take issue with the rounded back at the rear, both for the sedan and the hatchback, that makes taller passengers a little uncomfortable. We also preferred that the hatchbacks rear bumper be a little less cladded than what has been released in the market.

Technology & Safety

The market is today looking out for not just a car, but one that will assure them of their safety. Both hatchbacks have a number of great equipment that give them a great scores when it comes to safety, and the feds have given both a five-star overall rating for crash tests; which is a good start.

The 2017 Mazda3’s rollover ratings were a four-star, same for that of the 2017 Veloster. The difference between the two is the set of safety equipment that their manufactures have tacked in the hatchbacks. Hyundai outdoes Mazda and many more hatchbacks here, having installed its Blue Link suite in the car, featuring SOS services and emergency crash notifications. Parking sensors, blind spot monitors, rearview cameras and blind-spot monitors also make the hatchback one of the best in its lines as concerns safety features.

Small cars are largely purchased for fuel economy. They are all needed for running around town and doing those rare inter-town trips. The Hyundai, for example, has borrowed its powertrain from the Accent and the previous generation of the Elantra, with a 138-hp, 1.6-liter inline-4 under its hood. That 4-cylinder fitted in the turbo version of the Hyundai makes the car hit 60mph in less than 7.0 seconds, but surprisingly, it has a 28/35/31 mpg EPA rating.

If you are looking to save on fuel, you wouldn’t prefer the Mazda3, which has a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, proving to be a power contender but performs a little poorer on fuel economy.

The Bottom Line

Both hatchbacks look great on the outside, but a closer look reveals why the 2017 Hyundai Veloster is a better contender. It is a daring shift from the norm, and the market loves its styling. A few issues with the 2107 Mazda3 make it less competitive, especially because of its poorly done rear styling and its unimpressive score in fuel economy.
