2017 Hyundai Veloster vs. 2017 Mini Cooper

We are currently seeing a lot of competition among car manufacturers who are dealing with coups and smaller hatchbacks in Springfield Pennsylvania. The trends reflect a market that seeks for more adventure, power, styling and a touch of the past in such cars, and that is the reason why there is a lot of competition between cars like the 2017 Hyundai Veloster and the 2017 Mini Cooper. Below are some of the reasons why we prefer the Veloster.

Design & Style

There is really not much to critique about when it comes to the Mini Cooper’s exterior styling. It may as well be one of the most iconic styling designs we have among coupes and hatchbacks at large, considering that it has maintained the same form over the years. Two years ago, an overhaul was done on the MINI Cooper, but you would have to be an expert to notice any difference from what was there before.

Hyundai’s Veloster on the other hand has an offbeat tune to its design, in all the right ways. What you may recognize as broken door rules that feature one large door on the driver’s side and two on the passenger’s side is an arrangement that has interestingly wowed the market. We don’t spy too hard in the interiors of coupes to make a decision on which one to so if you are the adventurous kind of shopper, you may want to try out the not-so-conventional 2017 Hyundai Veloster.

Technology & Safety

Federal testers gave the 2017 MINI Cooper a four-star for Top Safety, but we are not too sure if it is a better safety contender than the Hyundai. The car manufacturer includes a package called the “fully loaded” package that is meant to contain a couple of safety equipment, but a deeper investigation did not reveal too much in terms of safety. We realize a hike in pricing among Cooper’s trims if you needed additional safety features.

For the Veloster, the Fed’s Top Safety Pick rated it as a four-star as well. However, you will find a better package of safety equipment tacked inside all its trims including a rearview camera, a larger blind-spot monitor and the Blue Link telematics package. This package includes a number of other safety features give it a stronger argument as a safety fortress compared to many other hatchbacks.

The Mini Cooper’s engine lineup remains unchanged from its last edition. However, the turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder producing 124-hp makes the car reach 60 mph in just about 7.4 seconds – quite modest for a coupe. We realized however, that you will have to get deeper into your pocket for a bigger engine. The car is not so much fun in the pencil straight interstate but does a better job on the twists and turns.

As for the Veloster, its 138-hp inline-4 is more than what you need to run around town. Its turbocharged 201-hp trim will be better for the longer ventures and will give you more than enough for traction. Its braking technology is just perfect thanks to a stronger set of brakes and stickier tires it has. The Veloster is also well known for fuel economy.

The Bottom Line

You will be better placed in a Veloster than a Mini Cooper if you are the kind of driver looking for a faster and a better styled modern coupe. Granted, the Mini Cooper boasts of a rich history, but we would always like to explore better equipped options that are found in cars like the 2017 Hyundai Veloster.
