2018 Hyundai Elantra vs. 2017 Kia Forte

There is a fast growing market in 2017 for sedans with a hatchback-like rear end in Springfield Pennsylvania. Two of the fast moving ones are the 2018 Hyundai Elantra and the 2017 Kia Forte. Both actually have 4-door and 5-door versions of the same, with varying engine capacities, and the market only benefits from such variations. However, we will look at a few reasons why the Hyundai is a better contender here in terms of styling, performance and safety scores.

Design & Style

The 2017 Elantra has managed to maintain the all-so-handsome front fascia synonymous to some of its brothers and sisters like the Sonata and the Santa Fe. In its own way, the trapezoidal grille has been shaped, perfectly suited for both the sedan and the hatchback. The sedan’s LED daytime lighting system is a great addition to a car that has a market all around the world.

Not much can be said about the 2017 Kia Forte. Granted, it has a striking outlook, but cannot be much of a contender if we compare the two grilles. Kia has come a long way to work out exterior car proportions for its sedans to suit the market, and when finally made it, it still isn’t as striking to wow the audience.

Technology & Safety

Most Hyundai models today are packed with a number of safety goodies, and the 2018 Elantra is one of them. In addition, IIHS has termed the car a Top Safety Pick+, and all thanks to its well-placed headlights, great crash test results and a set of advanced safety systems. In the sedan, you will find blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, active lane control and adaptive cruise controls.

The 2017 Kia Forte guarantees decent active-safety systems as well, but loses a few points on visibility since Kia has not yet standardized the rearview cameras in all its trims. Otherwise, all other safety equipment present in mid-sized sedans will also feature in the Forte. However, we are a little concerned with the frontal-crash scores of the current 2017 Forte.

Performance

You won’t buy the Elantra for its speed, though even at its best, the car still maintains its composure and gives the driver a solid ride. Under the hood fits a 2.0-liter inline-4 that gives the Elantra 147 horsepower. A gear selector gives the driver a few choices on what mode will be used to breathe life to its engine. What excites us about the Elantra is its dual suspension setup using MacPherson up front and torsion beam at the rear, to give the user a better bumpy road experience.

The 2017 Kia Forte has a 3-mode selector at its steering wheel, giving you options between normal, comfort and sports modes. It sits on a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with the same power output as the Hyundai. Though much similar to each other, we give Hyundai’s Elantra a plus for suspension.

The Bottom Line

The two have quite a number of similarities, and most drivers won’t be blamed for choosing either. However, choosy shoppers will look at the details, of which the 2018 Elantra would emerge better than the Kia. Its suspension, styling and safety scores all prove its worth on the road.
