2018 Hyundai Ioniq vs. 2017 Ford C-Max

As enthusiasts get tuned to the use of greener cars, car manufacturers are flooding the Springfield, Pennsylvania market with options like the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq and the 2017 Ford C-Max among others. Both are suitable as hybrid and electric car options, but those who still remain conventionally minded about car designs will prefer the Hyundai to the Ford. Here are the main reasons why.

Design & Style

The 2018 Ioniq, the greenest of Hyundai’s models sits between the Elantra and the Sonata. It comes either as a dedicated hybrid or an electric model, both of which are styled uniquely. Ioniq shares the high-tailed back that most hybrids of its class has, but Hyundai’s execution of the rear is skillfully done, to hide this conventional shape – you may take it for any other small car.

The high window-line of the Ford C-Max is a quality that on one front adds and on another front subtracts a score to its design. Overall, the small wheels and tires centered on large wheels arches, coupled with the arched roofline and snub nose make the design look bulbous from certain angles. The two grille openings seem inharmonious and rather bottom-heavy.

Technology & Safety

While the 2017 Ford C-Max adds more points on crash test scores, it is a surprise that it has not chosen to add some of the common advanced active-safety systems to its hybrids. We are missing the adaptive cruise control, automatic crash braking and lane-departure warnings synonymous to other Ford models.

The 2018 Ioniq on the other hand comes bundled with all the above, and tops up with the latest in active lane control on all its versions. Step up to the highest-mileage model, the Ioniq Hybrid Blue, and cruise in a car containing keyless ignition, a 7.0-inch touchscreen and an audio system, having the conventional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Performance

The 2017 Ford C-Max has remained largely unchanged in the performance scale since the hybrids were introduced in 2013. The 2.0-liter inline-4 moves the C-Max up to 62 mph on electric-only mode. Many people rate this slower than what they expected from Ford. However, we give it a plus for the smooth blend between the electric and friction breaking system it adopts.

Hyundai Ioniq uses a slightly smaller 1.6-liter inline-4 engine on both versions. For the hybrids, maximum output is rated at 139 hp. Though it makes use of friction brakes, the transmission in the Electric version seems well blended – you need not baby it to have it perform at maximum efficiency. The best thing about Hyundai’s hybrid is that you will get an economically viable package that can keep up with faster traffic on the highway.

The Bottom Line

We clearly see that the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq performs much better on the road than Ford’s C-Max. Though the Ford has some great features, with the Ioniq, you have a hybrid that does not look like one, managing to hide many of the obvious features displayed on others of its kind. You will drive a safer hybrid that easily competes on the highway with great balance and comfort, not forgetting its fuel economy advantages.
