2018 Hyundai Sonata vs. 2018 BMW 3 Series

The name of a car manufacturing brand plays a big role in the Springfield, Pennsylvania market, just as it does in most markets around the world. It is no surprise that BMW has been doing better in the high-end market when compared to Hyundai, but we are seeing a shift as technology and time advances. The 2017 BMW 3-series, being a luxury sports sedan is on an all-time war to retain its position against such contenders as the 2018 Hyundai Sonata, which proves style, comfort, and safety.

Design & Style

Cautiously, Hyundai unveiled a 2018 Sonata model that got rid of the dowdy-looking model we saw last year, and the response was great. What is dubbed a ‘supermodel’ seems to largely outdo the exterior’s outlook that the BMW Series-3 holds. The F30 3-series enters its sixth year in the sedan market with a look that feels dated and fuzzy around its edges. Its interior still looks plasticky and passengers still seem to feel a bit more confined inside.

Hyundai comes packaged with a bundle of goodies. You will be entertained through a 7.0-inch infotainment system, Bluetooth system and standard air conditioning. 16.3 cubic feet of leg-room gives taller passengers enough space at the back. The rear seatback also opens up to accommodate larger cargo through the rear end.

Technology & Safety

The BMW 3-series enters the market with a safety package meant to wow its users, and it sure does! The drive-assist package consists of a backup camera and park-distance control. Move up to the premium package and you will have keyless entry, a sunroof, front-seat lumbar support, heated front seats and navigation control.

We are not too sure though, if this can match up with the safety package found on the 2018 Hyundai Sonata. To start with the feds are amazed over its crush-test scores, with especially superior ratings for the front crash prevention. All Sonatas come with rear cross-traffic alerts, rearview cameras, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, stability control and a bundle of airbags. Interestingly, comparing the two cars, you seem to be safer driving the Sonata.

The 2017 BMW 330i has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that employs a new B46 powerplant low-friction, lightweight engine technology. It has an improved output of 248 horsepower and seems to use up less fuel. The only disadvantage of this new technology here is the sluggish 60mph acceleration in 5.4 seconds, against previous models that did 5.2 seconds.

Sonata’s Sport and Limited trims compete favorably well with the BMW sedan. Their 2.0-liter turbo-4 is rated at 245 hp, and has clean shifts up the 6-speed transmission. Hyundai does much better with fuel economy and is less noisy on heavier terrain, both inside and outside compared to the 3-series.

The Bottom Line

It is really hard to do fitting Hyundai comparison to a brand that captured the market for years. However, with time, Hyundai has come up exceptionally well to a point of outdoing the2018 BMW’s 3-series in style and interior features. Surprisingly, you will feel safer in a 2018 Hyundai Sonata; your ride on a rougher asphalt terrain will feel less noisy and less bumpy in the Sonata. What more do you want from a mid-sized sedan?
