2018 Hyundai Sonata vs. 2018 Subaru Legacy

They say that it is very hard to please a sedan market that has seen a number of car manufacturers race to be at the top. The Springfield Pennsylvania market is no exception, and both the 2018 Hyundai Sonata and the 2018 Subaru Legacy enter a field that is quickly swayed by one or two distinctive features that make one car better than the other. We will explore here some of the reasons that tilt the scales towards the Hyundai Sonata.

Design & Style

In 2015, Subaru’s legacy was named the ‘best car to buy’ largely because of new technologies employed and a clean finish on its exterior. We are not really sure if this still holds true for the 2018 models. Though some of its technology has been updated, not much has been changed outside.

The 2018 Sonata on the other hand has done quite a number in exterior styling, with the evocative fascia at the front boasting of an eye-catching hexagonal grille. Its rear end has largely been improved since last year, with a rear bumper tucking the plate right at the bottom of the hatchback-like profile. Taller passengers have enough leg room to stretch at the rear seats. 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space will be enough for larger items, and if more accommodation is required, you can always fold back the rear seats.

Technology & Safety

The Legacy’s EyeSight package containing adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and emergency braking seems impressive, but is no match for the standard safety features the Sonata has employed. With a ‘superior’ rating for the front crash prevention technology and ‘good’ rating for headlight tests, federal testers see few cars rated better than the 2018 Sonata.

Currently, all trims of the Sonata come bundled with blind-spot monitoring, rearview cameras, airbags and stability monitors and controls. Automatic emergency braking system is coupled with adaptive cruise control and active lane control. The car comes with usual high-tech features synonymous to most mid-sized sedans like the 7.0-inch touchscreen, the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth and air-conditioning. You may also be interested with the 5-year/60,000mile warranty it comes with.

The 4-cylinder engine of the 2018 Subaru Legacy is rated at 175 horsepower while the 6-cylinder is rated at 256-horsepower. Subaru engines have always been ranked among the powerful ones, but we are not too sure about fuel economy, considering all trims come as all-wheel drives.

If the right configuration is set, the 2018 Sonata is good with fuel economy – take for example the Sonata Eco, a 1.6-liter turbo 4 which is rated at 23/32/26 mpg. You will find a better road handler with the 2018 Hyundai Sonata, as the suspension mechanism is softer and more compliant with its electric power steering. Winding around the country roads is therefore more natural and comfortable.

The Bottom Line

There is more use for the 2018 Subaru Legacy as a power contender, which is not much of a selling point among sedan enthusiasts. You will want a car that plays well with fuel economy, has better steering handling and has a natural comfort when navigating bends. Both cars look pretty, but the 2018 Sonata scores higher on qualities the market is looking for.
