2018 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2017 Mazda CX-5

Crossover SUVs are now a favorite for many car enthusiasts in Springfield Pennsylvania, and there is looming competition between those who are willing to go for the 2018 Hyundai Tucson and those inclined to the 2017 Mazda CX-5. Both have been availed with exceptional features, but we will have a look at why the weights favor the Tucson over the CX-5 in today’s market.

Design & Style

Since its last release, we have not seen much change in design for the CX-5. Though the last model looked quite good, we expected this trend to continue to favor the Mazda, but haven’t seen much. Things are different with Hyundai Tucson though; we have seen a great improved difference between last year’s version and what we see today.

Shorter glass area, geometrically done headlamps and an added 19-inch alloy set of wheels for the upper trims highlight this new SUV from Hyundai, and it is nothing but breathtaking. The interior is equally elegant, having a good combination of texture and hard material. The knobs on the dash have been neatly placed, without the clutter that is synonymous to many SUVs today.

Technology & Safety

Shoppers are keen to buy a car with exceptional safety ratings, and this is one area that we find a slight discrepancy between Mazda and Hyundai. While the 2017 Mazda CX-5 tests are perfect for automatic braking and headlight configuration, the feds saw it fall short in its overall safety ratings. We acknowledge though that it has a stiffer roof than its previous model, which is good for safety in the event of an accident.

On the other front, the feds feels that the 2018 Tucson tests better for overall safety. Overall rollover ratings are great, though headlight configuration still remains a challenge for lower trims of this Hyundai. However, blind-spot monitoring, rearview cameras, lane-departure and parking sensors faithfully make up for this flaw and are a great addition for those techie-savvy car shoppers. You will feel confident driving a Tucson.

Performance

Mazda’s 6-speed, 187-hp inline-4 tacked under the hood may prove a better power contender than what we saw last year, though the turbo-charged engine might come with its challenges. For one, shifting between 1 and 2 has a slight delay. That may have its perks especially in merging with moving traffic, but can easily be misinterpreted for hesitation.

The Hyundai on the other hand shifts quickly and steadily to offer a well damped ride. The 164-hp, 2.0-liter inline-4 engine can be praised for better fuel economy than the Mazda as well. You will also have enough options with the Tucson to navigate slippery terrain and deep snow, thanks to the torque distribution technology it employs.

The Bottom Line

We have some great features in both vehicles that make them compete against each other in a level playing field. While the 2017 Mazda CX-5 has packed some great safety features in its trims, the Hyundai soars higher in design and performance. In addition, for those who enjoy a panoramic sunroof view through an SUV, your better partner will be the 2018 Hyundai Tucson.
