2022 Hyundai Kona Vs. 2021 Nissan Kicks

If you’re in the market for a new car and want something affordable, compact, and economical to fuel, your choices can be somewhat limited. If you only wish to the economy, the 2022 Hyundai Kona and 2021 Nissan Kicks are pretty much your only two options on the market right now. The thing is, they have pretty different looks from one another, so which of these vehicles would you choose? That’s what we’re going to explore why the 2022 Hyundai Kona takes the lead!

Design & Style

If you want an eye-catching and pleasing-looking crossover, you should choose Hyundai Kona for your next buy. The futuristic and high-tech design is full of confidence, and its powerful look will help you create a good impression on people around you. In comparison, Nissan Kicks comes with a less aggressive design, but it has ample ground clearance, which is helpful if you often go off-roading or traveling across rugged terrain. It also comes with excellent visibility, which makes driving easier because everything is in front of your eyes.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona’s interior is designed to have an airy feel that sets it apart from its rivals in the small crossover segment, with large windows adding to the sense of spaciousness. The dashboard has a floating appearance and remains relatively simple with few buttons, while an infotainment system operated via a 7-inch touchscreen dominates most of the center console. The seats are wide and soft, although those looking for support may want to opt for those found in higher trims as lower trims give way too much lateral movement when cornering hard. The back legroom is ample enough to fit an adult passenger comfortably on short trips behind a tall driver or front passenger without complaint about being cramped into place by other occupants.

Technology & Safety

Both cars come with multimedia and navigation options with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity standards across most trims, but it’s optional on lower-spec models in both cases. Regardless of trim level, both also get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system for their base SEL grades or higher (that includes a feature that lets you draw letters with your fingertip to search for destinations). It’s possible to add a 10-speaker premium audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio capabilities on higher trims, while Safety Sense P also comes standard on every model. Both models cover adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and intelligent high beams.

Both cars are a 5-star safety rating by NHTSA, but there are notable differences in driver assistance features between them. The 2021 Nissan Kicks offers an optional safety package that adds active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control to its standard side-impact airbags and ABS. However, these features aren’t available on any models of the 2022 Hyundai Kona (although you can get active lane control on specific models of its sister car, the Elantra GT). Instead, all Hyundais come with blind-spot monitoring as standard equipment, not so with Nissan.

Performance

While both cars come with a variety of engine options, power outputs and specifications vary. The basic 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 2022 Hyundai Kona produces 175 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. There is also a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that gets an EPA estimated 40 mpg on highways, but produces just 138 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque compared to 172 hp and 195 lb.-ft in its standard spec. The optional 2.0 TFSI I4 that gets 29 mpg combined has 201 hp at 6,000 rpm, while both top out at 6,400 rpm.

The Bottom Line

Both of these cars are great if you want something smaller than a crossover, but if you’re looking for space, comfort, and overall value, you can’t beat the 2022 Hyundai Kona. It’s safe to say that having two kids in elementary school is like navigating your way through an obstacle course every day—and it takes every bit of my energy to get everything done on time.
