The 2022 Hyundai Kona has a compact design with a turbo engine that is gutsy and lots of standardized features. But how does it compare to the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport, an SUV which is popular due to its rugged appearance, off-road handling and outstanding value?
Design & Style
The Ford Bronco Sport is a crossover which is angular with an upright stance. It has eyelet style LEDs with the name displayed across its blocky grille and it features thick cladding which is designed to protect the passengers. It has a bulging hood and roofline which is robust and within the cabin passengers will be presented with leather seats, resilient plastic and rubber. There is an eight inch touch display and the seats feel comfortable to sit in.
The Hyundai Kona has revised wheels with upgraded illumination and a grille which is wide. Rear and front skid plates can be seen in the exterior, with a digitized gauge display within the cabin and high resolution ten inch touch display. Those that want sporty looks and performance will want to select the N Line based trim.
Technology & Safety
The Hyundai Kona comes with a variety of driver assistance functions, such as emergency automatic brakes, lane management, notifications when departing lanes, and headlamps which feature automated high beams. Amenities within its cabin include the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, heads up display, and grained leather that features contrast stitching.
The Ford Bronco has received excellent scores from the NHTSA and IIHS, as it features many of the same functions found in the Kona. However, it only got a four star rating when it comes to rollover protection, which raises eyebrows given the fact it was designed to operate on challenging and uneven terrain. Luxuries within the cabin include a bottle opener, audio from Bang & Olufsen, cargo organizer and eight inch touch displays.
Performance
The Ford Bronco Sport comes with a turbo 3, 1.5 liter engine that can generate 181 horsepower with 190 pounds of torque, and has good acceleration and balance. The drivetrain functions with an all-wheel drive mechanism that enables torque shifting. Those that purchase the Hyundai Kona N Line will get a four cylinder engine that is turbocharged and capable of generating 195 horsepower, and its engine is wedded to an automatic dual clutch 7 speed transmissions.
The Bottom Line
The Hyundai Kona and Ford Bronco Sport are similar when it comes to performance, safety features and interior amenities. However, the Broncos eight speed has been known to flare; it can only tow 2200 pounds, its rollover protection is only 4 stars rather than 5 despite it being advertised as an off-road vehicle, and the Hyundai Kona has superior fuel efficiency, which makes it the winner.
