The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is a very impressive SUV with a head turning exterior, spry handling and a host of interior amenities. How does it fare against the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, a compact SUV which is coveted for its bold cabin, hybrid option, digitized cockpit and spacious interior?
Design & Style
The Hyundai Tucson can seat up to five passengers and features LEDs in the interior which extend to its fenders. It features body panels that have been flattened with a chiseled side profile and metallic spline which is woven inside its roofline. Within the cabin, passengers will be presented with hardened bevels, high resolution digital displays and comfortable seats with lots of cushioning. The vehicle offers multiple drive modes and those who want maximum performance should choose the N Line trim.
The Mazda MX-30 has a roofline which resembles a coupe, with back doors that are rear hinged and a fully electric powertrain. It comes in two trims, which are Premium Plus and base, and those who purchase Premium Plus will get all sorts of goodies like a steering wheel that is heated and a camera with 360 degree view.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda MX-30 has a proprietary suite of safety features which it calls i-Activsense, which includes countermeasures such as impact mitigation, lane management, pedestrian detection, automated emergency brakes, cruise control and numerous airbags. Comforts within its cabin include a nine inch touch display, navigation system, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and premium audio, with a sunroof and rearview mirror that dims automatically.
The IIHS was very impressed with the Hyundai Tucson and awarded it the prestigious Top Safety Pick designation. This is due to its many safety features, which include emergency automated brakes, excellent external vision, multiple airbags, passenger alerts, lane control, the ability to monitor blind spots and parking sensors. Comforts within its cabin include a ten inch touch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, powered sunroof and leather upholstery.
Performance
The Hyundai Tucson is outfitted with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 187 horsepower with 178 pounds of torque. However, when the electric motor is added its total power comes to about 226 horsepower. The Mazda MX-30 uses a motor which consists of a synchronous permanent magnet AC, which can generate 143 horsepower and it takes 9 seconds for it to accelerate from zero to sixty.
The Bottom Line
The Hyundai Tucson has a larger touchscreen, superior performance and safety credentials, but aside from all that, the Mazda MX-30 has a driving range which is pathetically short, its acceleration is poky and both the cargo and back seat space are too tight, which makes the Hyundai Tucson the winner.
