2022 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is a sport utility vehicle which is compact and designed for those looking for bold styling, a hybrid option and digital cockpit. But how does it stack up against the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, an SUV which is highly regarded for its rugged design, tech rich cabin and solid safety functions?

Design & Style

The Mitsubishi Outlander is attractive, and features a bold beak in front with LEDs that use 6 elements and a grille which is pronounced. Along the sides one can view the flattened beltline with vertical lines, and the materials within the cabin have been improved and now include a nine inch touch display with softer touchpads and drive mode selection.

The Hyundai Tucson sports an angular outer shell that is very pleasing to behold. Elegant creases can be seen near the doors with refined lines that extend to its taillights. In the frontal area you’ll see LED daytime style run lights which are fully integrated within its grille, and within the cabin passengers will be presented with cushy seats and a state of the art multimedia system which includes a ten inch touch display.

Technology & Safety

The Hyundai Tucson has been awarded the prestigious Top Safety Pick+, which is one of the automobile industry’s highest safety accolades. This is due to its outstanding crash test performance and plethora of countermeasures which include multiple airbags, lane control, emergency automated brakes, the ability to monitor blind spots, parking sensors and automatic alerts for rear passengers. Luxuries within its cabin include a camera with surround view, Apple CarPlay, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging for smartphones, leather seats that can be heated and climate control.

The Mitsubishi Outlander has also performed well on its crash tests and was given the Top Safety Pick designation by the IIHS. It has many of the features found in the Hyundai, but lacks parking sensors for the rear. Amenities within its cabin include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, USB ports, camera with surround view, seats that can be heated and an audio system from Bose.

Performance

The Mitsubishi Outlander has all-wheel drive and is equipped with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 181 horsepower. It can accelerate from zero to sixty in 9 seconds. The Hyundai Tucson can generate up to 226 horsepower when its electric motor is included, and can accelerate from zero to sixty in 8.8 seconds.

The Bottom Line

At first glance, these two SUVs seem practically tied, but there is more to the story than meets the eye. For instance, the Outlander has sluggish acceleration that results from its CVT, and while the suspension can absorb road bumps in most cases, some test drivers have complained of body roll, and this combined with its lack of a hybrid option, smaller touchscreen and tight third row makes the Hyundai Tucson the winner.
